Despite the avant-garde appearance of Hans J. Wegner’s Shell Chair, the general public was hesitant to accept its distinctive expression when it was released in 1963. Production was limited due to mixed reviews in the 1960s and the less-developed production techniques at that time. As a result of the interest of a new generation, it won broad public admiration almost immediately in 1998.
A three-arched leg frame is held in place by wing-like seats and curved backrests to give the design a floating lightness. Form-pressed veneer creates the chair’s signature seat and backrest, which cradles the user in luxurious comfort.
Several layers of veneer form the chair’s laminated legs, and the two front legs are constructed from a single piece, resulting in a unique and stable design.
