This chair uses a standard gas rod that provides smooth and reliable height adjustment. A pneumatic lift raises the mid-back seat from 18.9 to 22.8 inches (19.7 to 23.6 on the high-back).

You can also control the tilt and tension, allowing you to recline smoothly between 90° and 120° or lock the chair in your preferred position. These adjustable features make it easy to customize the chair exactly how you like it.

Is the Soft Pad a replica, a dupe, or the real Eames?

Ours is an honest reproduction of the Eames Soft Pad, made without a Herman Miller license, so replica, dupe, and knock off all describe it. The high-back version is also known as the Eames Soft Pad Management Chair. Ours is built in top-grain leather with individually cushioned panels, at a fraction of the genuine price, labeled plainly as a reproduction. What’s the difference between the Soft Pad and the Aluminum Group?

Same frame, different seat. The Soft Pad adds individually upholstered leather cushions to the Aluminum Group’s slim suspension, so it is the plusher of the two, built for long stretches at a desk. The Aluminum Group sits lighter and closer to the body. If you are seated most of the day, the Soft Pad is the one; if you are up and down a lot, the Aluminum Group. Is the Eames Soft Pad comfortable for all-day sitting?

That is exactly what it is built for. The individually cushioned panels are the whole point of the Soft Pad over the flatter Aluminum Group, and the seat height and tilt both adjust and lock, so you can set it to your desk and stay put. It is the model we point office buyers to when they will occupy the chair for eight hours.

Is the Soft Pad real leather?

Yes, top-grain leather on the seating surfaces, on an aluminum frame and base. Top-grain is the grade you want on a chair you use daily; it softens with age rather than peeling, unlike the bonded or coated “leather” many cheap listings hide. We state the grade plainly on every product.

Does the Soft Pad come in a high back, and does it recline?

It comes in both a high back and a mid back, and it tilts rather than reclines: a locking tilt from 100 to 125 degrees with tension control, plus adjustable seat height. The high back carries the support further up the shoulders. It is a working chair, not a lie-back lounger; for that, look at the Eames Lounge Chair.

How much is an Eames Soft Pad chair, new or vintage?

A genuine Soft Pad from Herman Miller starts around $3,520 new, and clean vintage examples rarely drop to a fraction of that.
